Wildfires and Santa Ana

Man, these Santa Ana winds are insane. They've already broken off a big chunk of one of my trees in the backyard, and destroyed a couple of EZ-ups in our neighborhood. Still, I'll take that over the fires that are engulfing the areas to the north and south of us right now. There is so much stuff in the air, your eyes water when you go outside, and visibility is terrible.

Right now, I'm just hoping we aren't evacuated, like so many other Southern Californians right now! If these damned winds would just die down, the firefighters could do their jobs.

Let's hope those winds die down soon. Scary! I was thinking about you guys when listening to the news yesterday. Sorry about the tree.

Good luck and no fires!

I found these when I tried to figure out what EZ-ups were.

EZ-ups are 10x10 portable shade shelters that every Californian owns. It took us five years of living here before we realized that we really did need one: too many times getting blasted by the sun at outdoor events (soccer, picnics, outings, etc)

The tree is no biggie. I actually hate these two trees in my backyard, so I'm perfectly happy when mother nature decides to do some trimming. I'm just glad the fires aren't a scare so far yet. We really are between the two biggest ones, but they are blowing west, as far as I know.

My office is closed again today, which is just as well, since the freeways leading there are all closed! :-)

Wow! I hope they pay you for the time off without raiding your vaca-time.

EZ-ups are a great concept. For here of course, the biggest need would be rain shelter.

While I am sure it sucks to be stuck and getting lungfuls of smoke, it is a blessing (non-denominational of course) that you aren't threatened. Hopefully one of our bigass rain storms will hit you soon...then the roads will be hazardous (sigh).

Yeah, I heard about the rain and snow up your way! We could sure use some of that right now.

I love EZ-ups. Cost about $100, fold up about the size of a slender 10-year old, and give you a goodly amount of shade. The nice ones even have a vent at the top that can withstand quite a lot of wind.

Actually, we don't have any smoke, its almost all just dust and sand off the deserts to the east now. Still makes the air quality bad, but whaddya gunna do!

You know what really pisses me off? We were on our way to deliver some water to a local shelter, when the guy in the car in front of me flicks a lit cigarette out his window. I'm thinking, what the HELL? Is he completely retarded? A big part of the 2003 San Diego fire started with a lit cigarette being flicked out the window. I hope there really is karma for people like that.

Google Maps and a TV station in San Diego have a map of the latest conditions in the area.

Yes, I've been living off that map, and the local news for two days now. They finally got the Palomar Mountain fire on the map. That's the one closest to us, and the biggest threat to Temecula.
